The story started out in spectacular style. The author has a gift for painting a picture with words. Hatton is very good at setting up an "alternative" reality full of supporting technologies and personalities. However, as the story develops it seems she runs out of steam and the writing becomes dull. The end comes after many pages of little action and concludes with a flurry of events that leaves one somewhat unsatisfied. The next novel hopefully puts things right by emphasizing Hatton's obvious gifts.Product details

Wow! This story was a wild ride into an adventure the likes of which I haven't seen before. Penn! Go get em! Looking forward to the next installment.
Slightly scary due to many unexpected twists and turns in plot. Very good characters they quickly seem real, even with their other worldliness. Any one with an active imagination will love this book as much as I did.
Fairly good story--a bit far-fetched--with ever more "gifts" to solve another crisis. But the characters got my attention and sympathies.
This book is well worth the time it takes you to read it. It spins, it moves, it dances; the words draw you in and keep you looking for more.
The premise is really interesting; I bought it on the strength of the blurb. But the writing style just didn't work for me. Couldn't make myself finish it.
For me at least. I guess it might be a coming of age story combined with the old struggle between good and evil. And thus no different than so many other books that I have read.
But despite that I find the story, plot and for the most part characters beliveable and compelling.
While I appreciated the premise of this book and the main character, the pace of the book seemed slow. This book didn't dwell on the relationship between the characters much either; perhaps that will happen in future books. I lost interest part way through yet finished the book. I read the remaining books in the series.
